Intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense. Plates over 1.5″ are required by ASTM standards to be normalized.

A514

A specification that covers quenched and tempered alloy structural steel intended for riveted, bolted, or welded structures. Available per specification to a thickness of 6 inches. Thickness is relative to requirements within the specification.

Intended primarily for service in welded construction of offshore structures, tubular joints, stiffened plate construction, and other intersections where portions of the plates will be subjected to tension in the thickness direction (Z-Direction). Due to such high tension standards this material has also been used in applications where resistance to vibration and torque is critical.
